3 Quick Do-It-Yourself Cleaning tips for food and other spills:
1. Use a Wet Vac (or hose attachment on your vacuum) to remove as much of the substance and liquid and soil as you possible. Don’t use a standard vacuum with a beater bar, because it will grind it into the carpet. The idea is to remove and gentle blot.
2. After you remove the soil, gently agitate the spot with a rag/sponge of warm/hot water with a drop of dishwashing soap (but make sure it is bleach free). If you have a safe carpet spotter, you can use that… but some (like Resolve) can make a stain permanent if it doesn’t work. Rinse with warm water and a separate rag in the same matter.
3. If the spot remains, do it again.
Most Spots: Use a simple solution of 50/50 water and white vinegar. Avoid high residue spotters like Resolve.
Grease and Oils: For greasy spots, apply rubbing alcohol to a cloth and gently dab the spot. Never pour it directly on your carpet.
Wax: Melt the wax onto a paper bag with a steam iron. Place the paper bag over the wax. Do not allow the iron to directly touch the carpet.
